How 'Masterchef' Star Michael Silverstein Creates Keto Recipes People Actually Want To Eat

If you've ever attempted the keto diet, you would know why so people get tired of it rather quickly. Days filled with cheese, butter, heavy cream, and pepperoni slices sound like they would be fun, but in reality, it gets boring fast! Thankfully for keto dieters everywhere, there's finally a solution to the problem. Chef Michael Silverstein is out to change the way the world sees keto cooking!

Diply had the chance to sit down with the Masterchef star about his upcoming cookbook, "New Keto Cooking," and chat about what the upcoming book means for Keto dieters everywhere.

When it comes to the keto diet, there's no denying it's had its criticisms. Like any other lifestyle, there are positive and negative testimonies.

For those who don't know, the ketogenic diet is a low carb, high-fat diet that puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

According to Heathline, when your body is in ketosis, it becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat and using it for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain

A common criticism of the keto diet is that its participants don't eat enough vegetables and consume too much trans-fat.

Chef Michael Silverstein is here to change the way people see, and eat, on the keto diet. He told us he started on his keto health journey when he turned thirty. What attracted the chef to the keto lifestyle was flexibility. No calorie counting, no point tracking — just simple, low-carb fare.

"I love food. I never planned on giving that up," he explained.

One look at Michael's Instagram will have you drooling. His delightful spins on carb-y classics will have even the most starch obsessed chefs eager to try his recipes.

Michael first got noticed as a contestant for Masterchef because of his Instagram, which features food that he describes as "sexy, chef-y keto food that isn't diet-y."

Of course, you don't have to be following the low-carb lifestyle in order to try out some of these delicious dishes! Michael describes his recipes as "really good food that just happens to be keto."

When asked what his biggest inspiration was, Michael told us he couldn't have finished the cookbook without his mom. "She is my biggest fan," he explained. Michael told us the two were on the phone almost every night cooking and sharing recipes together.

"This cookbook was the single hardest project I've ever taken on," he continued. "I refused to cut corners. It is my baby. Every word, every photograph is a piece of my heart."

While Michael is excited about every single dish in this cookbook, he thinks fans will really love his keto take on seafood.

"There is a seared scallop dish that is to die for," he told us.

The book even includes an entire date night section — perfect for those who are looking for elevated, and romantic, keto meals!

Michael let us know that his upcoming cookbook, "New Keto Cooking" isn't meant to be a diet book. It's meant to inspire people to change their lifestyle. He aims to take the keto diet out of the "fad" category and instead, showcase it's life-long benefits.

Part of the sustainability in the diet is to allow yourself a non-keto treat here and there! He was honest with us about the importance of enjoying a slice of cake on your birthday, or indulging in that coveted piece of mom's homemade pie during the holidays — just don't overdo it!

It's easy to not fall off the wagon when the recipes are as good as Michaels, "You have to love what you’re eating," he insisted.

Since the start of the pandemic, Michael has been hosting online cooking classes, which he says has given him some of the most rewarding moments in his career thus far, "It means a lot to see real families turning my recipes into meals." He hopes to continue these virtual classes into 2021.

Before starting any meal, though, remember Chef Michael's #1 tip — get organized in the kitchen! He told us the best way to have success with cooking is to have everything prepared beforehand, just like you're about to star in your own Food Network show!

Lastly, when we asked him what chef Gordon Ramsay was like in real life, Michael confirmed he's just as magnificent as he seems on TV.

"I have never met anyone with a bigger heart than Gordon Ramsay," he revealed.

"New Keto Cooking" is available now for pre-order before hitting bookshelves December 8th.
