20 Slightly Disturbing Pics That Have An Explanation

Sometimes we need to do a double-take before we realize what's going on. Sometimes we need a double-take and an explanation. A lot can be lost on first appearances, and many things can seem off at a glance. Like the photos in this list, which look unsettling at first, but have a perfectly innocent explanation.

"Entrance of an underwater observatory in Lake Zug (Switzerland)."

Reddit | DIY_Maxwell

This door that looks like it leads to nowhere is certainly surreal, and makes for an odd scene.

Keeping Heads Above Water.

Reddit | Infinite_Moment_

You're going to learn that for a lot of these pictures, the 'innocent explanation' is that it's art.

Like this sculpture here by Issac Cordal titled 'Politicians discussing global warming'.

"A creepy little Christmas tree fully decorated in the middle of the woods. Powered by what looked like mini solar panels."

Reddit | ygtjf

Another person from the same state came into the comments to explain the admittedly eerie tree's purpose, "This is done every year in my state in the state parks. Volunteers get assigned a park and then they 'hide' a tree. Basically they can pick out any tree that is visible from a marked trail and decorate it however they want [...].

Then there is a challenge to find them. If you take a picture of yourself in front of all (or maybe the most) trees you win a prize."

Luxury Left Behind.

Reddit | Tom_Scanlan

Called the Burj Al Babas, this is a ghost town filled with hundreds of castle-style homes. Construction began on this villa in 2014, with the company behind them hoping they'd become homes for the wealthy, both in Turkey where they reside and for tourists. However, that company went bankrupt in 2018, causing all other investors to pull out of the project, and leaving the project abandoned where it stands.

"Medieval Beekeeping outfits were pretty creepy."

Reddit | TheBarleson

I guess before fine mesh was really invented, wicker masks achieved the same thing! I also kind of like this color scheme, very fitting.

Woodland Spirits.

Reddit | SidB_22

Like I said before, this is art, pieces of driftwood and the like fit together expertly to make these humanoid figured. I like to think they're nice guys.

Just In Case.

Reddit | Elias_Poor

This is a monument in Georgia that has instructions in 8 different languages on how to rebuild society should an apocalyptic event occur. It's also a calendar, compass, and a clock. The monument itself isn't creepy, but the reasoning behind it is a little worrisome.

"This root has creepy red blood."

Reddit | memphy

Identified in the comments as the aptly named bloodroot, this sap it produces used to be used as dye until people learned it was incredibly dangerous and destructive to the skin.

"My vitiligo has turned half of my upper eyelashes white."

Reddit | TheRakishRaconteur

Admittedly, I only thought this photo was unsettling because I thought her eyelashes were her actual eye. Instead, she has a super unique and gorgeous trait!

A New Perspective.

Reddit | Zairy47

At first glance, it might be hard to identify, but what you're looking at is a whale suspended in water while it sleeps. The perspective is what got me, as we don't often see whales dead on, it's shines a whole new light on them!

"It's only creepy if you lose the last bowl."

Reddit | MetaEd

This one's just a product that wasn't well thought out. I think I'd take it upon myself to purposely lose the last one.

Washed Up.

Reddit | Pipirazz

This skull appeared out of nowhere on a beach in Dorset in 2013, and while we all hoped it was the confirmation that dragons were real, it was instead a publicity stunt for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones.

The Tiniest Bite.

Reddit | WhosTR

Did you know that squids have little rings of teeth inside their suction cups that need to be cleaned out before they're cooked? Because I learned this not long ago and my life has not known peace since.

"Went to an open house and encountered this creepy chandelier made out of doll hair."

Reddit | rp8ball

Now this one I don't have a concrete explanation for, but...I'm hoping it's just art.

"This lowercase stop sign."

Reddit | PlatinumPlays2AGECD

It is a bit unsettling to look at, just due to it being the exact opposite of what you expect.

With some group detective work, the people in the comments figured these were fake stop signs put up by nearby establishments to aid with traffic. Since they're so obviously different, they can't get dinged for putting up imitation signs, but that also means they're not technically legal and thus don't need to be followed.

"This giant beet from my garden looks like a heart."

Reddit | kashikat

Are you sure it's not still alive and beet-ing? Aha...anyway.

"Ostrich toes/feet."

Reddit | ashleadie

It's pictures like these that remind me of how closely a lot of birds are related to dinosaurs.

"My dads kitchen has two gravestones outside the door dating back to 1721."

Reddit | PappaGravy

When pressed for more details, the uploader provided, "So the story goes in the 1700’s a stone mason lived here. They used to transport a lot of prisoners through the town and the stonemason used to create all of the tombstones for the deceased prisoners.

We are led to believe these were ones he did as [practice]... (or at least that’s what we hope!)"

"Halloween costumes from the 30s."

Reddit | PeachBusiness

Learning these are Halloween costumes doesn't make it any less creepy, but I guess it's a better explanation than weird cult happenings or something.

"This is a wasp nest that has grown around the flood lights on a garage."

Reddit | GallowBoob

I could easily see a killer in a slasher fic wearing this as a mask.
