New York City Reports No New COVID-19 Deaths For The First Time In Four Months

According to Worldometers, 3,434,018 people throughout the United States have contracted COVID-19 and 137,850 have died from the virus at the time of this writing.

As has been the case for months, these numbers indicate that the U.S. remains the world's hardest hit nation by the coronavirus. However, this hasn't been a uniform experience across the country as different sites of devastation have sprouted up throughout the past four months.

Back in April, both the state and city of New York were in dire crisis, but that now seems to be true of several states throughout the American South and Southwest.

This reality makes life under the pandemic uncertain, but it also gives us an opportunity to see how the condition of previously ravaged states has improved. And recent reports from New York City seem to add a hopeful note to an otherwise grim national landscape.

Information about the coronavirus pandemic is rapidly changing and Diply is committed to providing the most recent data as it becomes available. Some of the information in this story may have changed since publication, and we encourage readers to use online resources from CDC and WHO to stay up to date on the latest information surrounding COVID-19.

With rising cases and a shortage of resources to deal with them, it was hard not to see New York's circumstances in April as nightmarish.

As NBC New York reported, as many as 799 people died per day across the state as a result of contracting COVID-19 and it wasn't unheard of for over 18,000 of its citizens to be in hospitals at once.

New York coronavirus deaths have since totaled over 24,000.

On Sunday, the number of new deaths apparently fell to five throughout the entire state and the news from New York City itself is even more encouraging.

As USA Today reported, there have been no new coronavirus-related deaths within the city for the first time in four months.

This news came at around the same time that Florida's new cases have reached record-breaking levels.

According to USA Today, this came with a Sunday report of 15,000 new cases in the Sunshine State. And the next day wasn't much better as 12,000 new cases were reported.

As NBC New York reported, spikes like these have inspired New York health care workers to travel to more intensely affected states to help in the fight against the virus.

And that relief is apparently happening through official channels as well.

According to NBC New York, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is offering ventilators, masks, gowns, medication, and advice to any states that are starting to see their health care systems overwhelmed.

He is also cautioning New Yorkers to remain as vigilant as ever about wearing masks and social distancing.

This is in preparation for the second wave of the virus that experts predict will take hold before the year is out.

As Cuomo said, "We’re doing everything we can, but I can feel it coming."
