Anne Hathaway Says Chairs Were Not Allowed On 'Dark Knight Rises' Set

In a recent "Actors on Actors" Variety segment featuring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, Anne revealed one thing she recalls about working on any set with renowned filmmaker, Christopher Nolan, including the set of The Dark Knight Rises: There was a strict, no-chair rule.

While that might sound a bit bizarre, it turns out that there's actually a good reason behind it!

Even if by some chance you don't recogize the name, Christopher Nolan, you would *definitely* recognize plenty of his movie titles.

He is among one of the most famous and celebrated filmmakers of our time!

He is responsible for films like, *Interstellar, Inception, Batman Begins, Batman vs. Superman, Man of Steel* as well as:

The Dark Knight and of course, the reason we're here, The Dark Knight Rises.

For those of you that have never seen *The Dark Knight Rises*, allow me to fill you in on what you've been missing:

IMDb

The Dark Knight sequel was released in 2012, starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Morgan Freeman.

It takes place eight years after the events that transpired in *The Dark Knight*.

IMDb

Bane, the antagonist of the film and former member of the League of Shadows, abducts nuclear physicist Dr. Leonid Pavel from a CIA aircraft, and sets up base inside the sewers of Gotham.

After causing serious disruption to the city and the city's economy, Bruce Wayne is forced to take matters into his own hands — as always.

IMDb

And naturally, as I'm sure you can predict, he saves the day.

And while there are probably countless reasons behind Christopher's success, Anne Hathaway recently revealed one small part of it.

IMDb

And it's a weird, certainly unexpected one!

He doesn't allow chairs on set.

My initial thought on this was, "What does Christopher Nolan have against sitting down?"

But, upon further review, he might actually be onto something!

Don't knock it 'til you try it, amirite?

In a recent "Actors on Actors" *Variety* segment, featuring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman, Anne gave fans the full scoop on what it's like to work with Christopher and his no-chair clause.

IMDb

"I don’t want to contradict you," she said to Hugh regarding no-cell phone policies on movie sets.

"But you’ve worked with three directors that don’t allow cellphones: Christopher Nolan."

IMDb

"Oh, that’s right," Hugh said, remembering his time on the set of The Presitge — another Christopher Nolan film.

"Chris also doesn’t allow chairs," Anne continued.

"I worked with him twice. He doesn’t allow chairs," she went on, explaining his reasoning.

IMDb

"His reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working."

He makes a good point. I can't argue with this.

She admitted that his bizarre policies have evidently worked in his favor.

IMDb

"I mean, he has these incredible movies in terms of scope and ambition and technical prowess and emotion," she said.

"It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget".

IMDb

"I think he’s onto something with the chair thing," she concluded.

I mean, sitting isn't usually a productive use of time. So logically, this definitely makes some sense.

So, if you were ever wondering if there are small changes you can make in your workplace that will increase your productivity, here you go!

Step one: Remove the chairs.

What do you think of Christopher Nolan's no-chair policy on his movie sets, as explained by Anne Hathaway in *Variety's* recent segment, "Actors on Actors"?
