'The Lord Of The Rings' Star Sir Ian Holm Dead At 88

Legendary English actor Sir Ian Holm has passed away at the age of 88, The Daily Mail has confirmed.

Holm was most famous for his role as Bilbo Baggins in *The Lord Of The Rings* trilogy.

Holm revived the role for The Hobbit series as well. Holm was nominated for an Oscar for his work in the 1981 film Chariots Of Fire, and was also a renowned stage actor, winning an Olivier Award for Best Actor for his role as King Lear.

"It is with great sadness that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," his agent said in a statement.

"He died peacefully in hospital, with his family and carer. Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely," his agent continued.

Fans and friends of the actor took to social media to share their messages of condolences as well.

Director Edgar Wright shared a touching post.

Wright referred to Holm as "a genius actor who brought considerable presence to parts funny, heartbreaking & terrifying."

A fan tweeted, "Rest in peace to an absolutely perfect Bilbo and a wonderful actor."

"An absolute legend and an incredible loss," one fan shared on Twitter.

" Raise your glasses in the Green Dragon to this most extraordinary Hobbit that we all loved and dreamed of going on an adventure with," a fan tweeted.

Holm was 88. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones in this difficult time.
