NBC Anchor Lester Holt Launches New Show To Educate Children About COVID-19

NBC anchor Lester Holt has recently launched a brand new twice-weekly show aimed at helping children understand the coronavirus and its ongoing impact on the modern world.

According to Associated Press, the newscast runs between six and 10 minutes, and is available on NBC's YouTube channel, as well as on other digital platforms.

Information about the coronavirus pandemic is rapidly changing and Diply is committed to providing the most recent data as it becomes available. Some of the information in this story may have changed since publication, and we encourage readers to use online resources from CDC and WHO to stay up to date on the latest information surrounding COVID-19.

The show's purpose is simple: educate children, while also helping them realize they're definitely not alone right now, no matter how lonely they feel.

As Holt told AP, "It’s healthy to have someone who will talk to them in as plain a language as possible and really walk them through what we know and what the coping techniques are for all of us."

New episodes are posted online every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.

The new series' inaugural episode was uploaded on April 15.

Discussion spawned from a question posed by a little girl named Sadie from Morristown, New Jersey, one which even adults have been wondering: "When is coronavirus going to end?"

NBC's medical correspondent, Dr. John Torres, helpfully explained to the show's adolescent viewers that experts are hoping that as long as people continue to adhere to social distancing and safety measures, within a few months children like Sadie might be able to go outside and reunite with their friends again.

In addition to the question and answer period with Torres, the show also featured homeschooling tips, and even some much-needed feel-good stories.

After sharing a story about a teen pilot in Virginia who's flying essential medical supplies to rural hospitals, host Lester Holt concluded the show.

"We hope you found this informative, we hope we answered some of your questions, and made you smile," he told viewers.

Holt also encouraged kids to send in their video questions for a chance to appear in another episode if their question is addressed and answered.

Since the first episode aired, several more have been uploaded to NBC's YouTube channel.

In the latest edition, experts break down the science behind vaccines, as well as how the coronavirus is affecting animals and the ecosystem.

In the positive news portion of the video, Holt shares how one little girl from Georgia is making the most of her time in quarantine with incredible sidewalk chalk art.

As Holt explains, the young girl's family has used the chalk drawings to allow her to have as many wonderful adventures as possible, all without leaving her own driveway.

The host explains these adventures through a delightful rhyming verse, concluding with these lines:

"If you've learned something new, please let it be this:

You can use your mind to dream anything you wish.

"As we think of our country, today and forever,

Let's remember we're always stronger together."
