Florida Animal Shelter Celebrates Historic First After Every Dog Is Adopted

A Florida animal shelter has a lot to celebrate after they recently announced every single available dog has found their furever home, leaving the kennel completely empty for the first time ever.

According to CNN, Friends of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control shared a video to their Facebook page this week to celebrate the incredible achievement, and to try and keep the momentum going with even more adoptions.

In the video, ecstatic staff line the empty cages in the kennel and clap for all the dogs who were adopted.

"An incredible and joyful thing happened today," the caption reads. "For the first time in the history of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, we have completely emptied one of our three dog kennels!"

It goes on to explain that this is one of the shelter's three kennels, which is used as both a stray housing kennel and adoption overflow kennel. Inside, there are 48 dog runs which can hold two animals each, and are currently completely empty.

Elizabeth Harfmann, the community outreach manager for the shelter, said the historic first was made possible by the Palm Beach community.

"It's definitely been a combined effort from the community. The animals went to foster homes, adopters and to our partner rescue organizations," she told CNN. "We've also seen a decrease in incoming animals, so that has helped as well."

With the pandemic still going strong in the country and self-isolation orders still in effect, shelters are experiencing a surge in animal adoptions.

Since most people are now either working from home or are at least quarantined inside, they have more free time which can be devoted to a pet.

But the pandemic also means that some animals are being surrendered to shelters after their owners lost their jobs, or have fallen ill and can no longer take care of them.

Although they're only taking emergency surrenders right now, Harfmann said the Palm Beach shelter still has many animals available for adoption.

She reported that there are 79 animals waiting anxiously to find their furever home, including 32 dogs, two cats, two horses, and a pig named Charlotte.
