Knitting Can Reduce Anxiety And Feelings Of Isolation, Survey Suggests

I took a class called Making and Thinking back in my second year of my Master's, and it's exactly what you think it would entail: making and thinking. The purpose of the class was to make something and reflect on the process. While it may seem silly to take a whole class to do something like that, I do have to say I never really thought about how powerful making something with your hands is.

I noticed that focusing on the stitches of embroidery instead of spending hours procrastinating on Facebook really helped divert my attention from my stress and even calmed me. Now I know there's actual evidence to support my feelings.

Needleworkers sort of get a bad rap for being boring, and if you still think that, the joke's on you.

That's because British organization Knit for Peace conducted a survey that proves all the amazing benefits knitting and crocheting has.

For one, they found knitting and crocheting can positively impact mental health.

Many participants in their study reported that knitting relaxes them and helps reduce anxiety and depression. It also helped distract them from other feelings, like an escape.

And there is in fact science to back those claims. One study found that there is a positive relationship between knitters and their feelings of happiness and calm.

Needlework is also good for individuals' physical health.

Many participants expressed that it helps them cope with their chronic illnesses, arthritis, and sore muscles.

Studies show that it's also a great distraction for those with chronic pain, helping them feel like they're focusing on something else other than their pain.

Knitting and crocheting also helps people feel less lonely.

A study reported in Knit for Peace's literature review found that creative activities help people foster connections with others, whether it be online or in-person.

If you think about it, you probably feel that way with some of your own interests!

If you haven't already, now's the time to try your hand at some sort of making!
