Italian Man Wears Giant Cardboard Disk To Protect Himself From Coronavirus

A man in Italy has taken it upon himself to do whatever he can in order to keep people away from him during the coronavirus outbreak. And if that means strapping a giant cardboard disk to his body, then that's exactly what he's going to do.

As Daily Mail reported, the unnamed Italian was recently filmed enforcing social distance via spherical means while walking through the busy streets of Rome. And to say he got some looks is just a bit of an understatement.

In Italy alone, there have been a reported 827 death and 12,462 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus.

That makes this the most affected country outside of mainland China as of right now.

WHO recently reported that there are currently over 125,000 COVID-19 cases in the world, and nearly 5,000 have now died as a result of the disease.

Italy is currently under a national lockdown, and has recently closed all non-essential shops and services.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the world is watching to see how the country responds to the virus.

"At this moment the whole world is certainly looking at us for the numbers of the contagion, they see a country that is in difficulty, but they also appreciate us because we are showing great strictness and great resistance,” he said in a Facebook address.

"I have a deep conviction. I would like to share it with you. Tomorrow not only will they look at us again and admire us, but they will take us as a positive example of a country that, thanks to its sense of community, has managed to win its battle against this pandemic.”

Of course, Italians are doing whatever they can right now to try and stay safe and healthy during the outbreak.

Enter: this man and his "keep away" cardboard disk.

While visiting Testaccio market in Rome, he was filmed attracting some serious looks from other shoppers, particularly when they were forced to give him and his homemade outfit a wide berth. He also carried a tool with him to pick up litter.

Speaking in Italian, one bystander asked the man, "And would this be the security distance for?"

"For coronavirus," the spherical man replied.

The gent behind the camera then bursts out laughing and exclaims, "Wonderful. I can't cope!"

The video was originally posted to a private Instagram account and has since been shared elsewhere on social media, including YouTube.

While his methods are pretty extreme, this Italian man seems to be following WHO's encouragement for social distancing.

This measure entails putting enough distance between yourself and others in order to avoid catching (or spreading) a virus. Like the coronavirus.

This includes working from home, avoiding mass gathers and events, and even maintaining a safe distance of one meter from individuals who are coughing or sneezing.
