Disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein was sentenced on Wednesday after his highly publicized trial and eventual conviction on first degree criminal act and third degree sexual assault charges.

Weinstein's defense had previously asked for the minimum sentence of five years.

“His fall from grace has been historic, perhaps unmatched in the age of social media,” they wrote in a letter to the judge. They also cited Weinstein's poor health and advanced age meant any sentence above five years "is likely to constitute a de facto life sentence."

However, the prosecution asked for a sentence that "reflects the seriousness of the defendant's offenses."

The prosecution cited a "lifetime of abuse towards others, sexual and otherwise," in their request, and stated that "Starting in the 1970's, he has trapped women into his exclusive control and assaulted or attempted to assault them."

The prosecution also noted that sentencing isn't limited to just "the evidence at the trial."

They wrote that the judge has "wide discretion" to consider all that is known about Weinstein when it comes time to deliver a sentence.

The judge arrived at a sentence of 23 years.

The judge also told Weinstein that he will be formally registered as a sex offender.

Weinstein's team have said they will appeal the jury's decision to convict.
