Shakira's Tongue Gesture Was Actually To Honor Her Arab Roots

Yes, there have been a whole lot of memes about this moment, but how silly do you feel now, knowing that it actually had meaning?!

Shakira and Lopez honored their Latinx community, but Shakira wanted to honor another part of herself during the show.

There were a lot of now famous moments during the Superbowl halftime show.

They had kids in cages, they had Jennifer Lopez do a pole dancing routine, they had the Puerto Rican flag, and, of course, they had Shakira moving her tongue rapidly back and forth.

And if there was one meme worthy moment of the show it was definitely that one.

It was almost instantaneous.

For a while, no one was even talking about the music and just that moment in particular!

But did you know that it wasn't just any tongue gesture?

It actually had meaning behind it.

You see, Shakira's father is Lebanese, and in their culture, the tongue gesture, called zaghrouta, is used to express joy.

Shakira was praised for her inclusion of the gesture, with one person even saying:

"In the melting pot that is Miami, you could not have picked a better Super Bowl act and this was a lovely touch."
