Stores Are Reserving Purple Parking Spots For Soldiers Wounded In Combat

There are a lot of specialized parking spots popping up lately. There are the classic handicapped-accessible spaces, but now there are spots for pregnant mothers, families, and even some for people who drive eco-friendly cars.

Whether you agree with those or not, I think we can all get behind the latest initiative to begin gaining support across the country.

More and more businesses have begun adding purple spaces to their lots.

Those spaces are reserved for wounded veterans, many of whom may not be eligible for a handicapped permit.

The signs are created and distributed by Wounded Warriors Family Support, a nonprofit in Omaha, NE.

The signs are offered for just the cost of shipping to any business in the country that wishes to install them.

The project began in 2012 to honor the country's Purple Heart recipients, of which there are about 1.8 million.

The signs need to be installed based upon the business' local regulations.

While the signs aren't "official" and can't be enforced, most people honor the intended use.

To more clearly differentiate the spaces, some businesses are also employing purple paint to make them stand out.
