California Eliminates Taxes On Diapers And Menstrual Products For The Next Two Years

For parents and women in California, 2020 is off to a positive start as two essential products are now tax-free in the state.

As of January 1, diapers and menstrual products will be tax-free for the next two years in an effort to make life more affordable for families and eliminate sales tax inequality.

The temporary end to diaper taxes was announced in a new bill last June as part of the state's budget.

Governor Gavin Newsom included the initiative as part of his Parents Agenda which seeks to make life more affordable for families in the state.

Feminine hygiene products such as pads, tampons, and menstrual cups will also be tax-free for the next two years.

According to Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, the tax on menstrual products is the only "gender-specific" tax in the state.

Globally, activists have been pushing for an end to the so-called "Tampon Tax" for years, with some countries like Canada permanently eliminating the tax nation-wide.

On Twitter, Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez praised the move towards "sales tax equity".

The Assemblywoman also expressed her desire for this temporary tax break to become "permanent" in the future.

Others have taken to Twitter to express their approval of the new bill coming into effect.

A number of women praised the news through social media.

It is estimated that parents will save up to $100 per year on diapers because of the new bill.

Many of them also expressed their approval over the bill and shared the news with other parents in the state online.
