95-Year-Old Midwife Retires After Delivering 5,000 Babies Over The Course Of Her Career

Being a midwife has to be one of the most unique jobs in the world. As many parents know, every birth is unique and unpredictable, so making a career out of this process is something few get to experience.

For many parents, midwives are health professionals that help them through pregnancy and the birth process.

In many parts of the world, it is a midwife, not a doctor, who attends normal, healthy births. While they are less common in North America, there's no denying the impact they have on many babies' lives.

One midwife in Japan recently retired after a career that extended for 70 years.

After attending 5,000 births, Fujie Sakamoto, a 95-year-old midwife from Tanabe City in Japan decided she had welcomed her last baby into the world.

During the course of her career, Sakamoto became a respected figure and leader in maternity health in Japan.

She has written a number of books on the topics of pregnancy, birth, and early child care.

Even though she will no longer be delivering babies herself, Sakamoto plans on staying on as a consultant at her maternity clinic in Tanabe.
