A pair of gay penguins have reportedly egg-napped their way into fatherhood (and viral stardom) after stealing an egg from a heterosexual penguin couple to raise as their own.
According to Huffington Post, the big heist took place at a Netherlands zoo where two African penguins took advantage of "unguarded moment" to see their dreams of parenthood become a reality.
Roughly translated, the Instagram post reveals the unnamed penguins "acquired" their new egg while no one was looking.
So basically, they saw their opportunity and they took it. Apparently the rule of "finder's keepers" applies to the animal world, too.
Zookeeper Marc Belt told Dutch News, “The gay couple are looking after the egg very well and take turns in keeping it warm."
Officials at the zoo aren't sure if the stolen egg has been fertilized and won't know until after it's been properly nested and hatched. In the meantime, the penguin couple who lost the egg have already produced a new one, so everyone's happy.
"I want the energy of this Dutch gay penguin couple, who apparently stole an egg 'when no one was looking' and are now trying to raise it as their own" one Twitter user wrote.
Another added, "Icons, the both of them."
In one episode, the character Leslie Knope publicly officiates the marriage two male penguins, causing an uproar in her traditional town of Pawnee.
As this Twitter user wrote, "The gay penguins that Leslie Knope married walked so these penguins could run."
