Calls Out Jennifer Lopez Over Monster-in-Law Injury

On Thursday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Jane Fonda revealed interesting insights into shooting the unforgettable scene with Jennifer Lopez in the film Monster-in-Law.

During her guest appearance on the show, the Academy Award-winning actress remembered filming the scene from the 2005 romcom where she and Lopez exchanged multiple slaps.

Reflecting on the filming of the famous slap scene, Fonda, 85, recounted that the slap resulted in a cut across her eye, extending to her eyebrow.

It has been nearly two decades since the film's release, and according to Fonda, Lopez has "never apologized" for the harm caused.

During the show's Thursday episode, Jane Fonda appeared as a guest alongside her close friend and frequent collaborator, Lily Tomlin, with Drew Barrymore discussing various projects from the careers of the Grace and Frankie co-stars.

When Barrymore brought up Monster-in-Law during the discussion, Jane Fonda immediately recalled the memorable slapping scene.

"I slap her, she slaps me. … Well Jennifer -- as per Jennifer -- she had this enormous diamond ring," Fonda recalled.

"And so, when she slapped me one of the times, it cut open across my eye, my eyebrow."

"You know, and she's never apologized," Fonda told Barrymore.

When the wedding day of Kevin and Charlie has finally come, Viola makes an entrance donning a snow-white attire, prompting Charlie to demand that her to-be mother-in-law change her outfit.

This request results in a physical altercation between Viola (Fonda) and Charlie (Lopez), with both of them hurling slaps at each other in a tit-for-tat fashion.

Charlie's first slap is followed by an apology, but Viola responds sharply, "You don't go and slap somebody and then apologize, get some backbone."

Lopez has previously opened up about how the scene resulted in Fonda suffering an injury above her eye, but despite Fonda's claims to the contrary, Lopez hinted that she did apologize afterward.

In a 2019 YouTube video, the 53-year-old singer called the slapping scene "one of the most fun scenes" she's ever done.

Lopez recalled, "[Fonda] really really went for it, and so did I, and then I punched her in the eye by mistake -- right there -- ouch."

The singer continued, "I was so afraid to hit Jane Fonda in the face or hurt her in any way. ... She was so brazen and [said] like, 'Just hit me, don't worry about it.'"

"I was like, 'No! I don't want to hurt you," she shared, adding, "And she was like, 'Let's just go, just go for it!'"

Lopez said that she was "mortified" after the slap when Fonda had a "blood blister" at the top of her eye, claiming that she told her "Oh my god! I'm so sorry!"

Fonda was completely unfazed by the injury, as Lopez shared that Fonda reassured her, saying "It's fine! It's fine!"

The Hustler star added, "She didn't care. She's such a gangster b---ch. I just love her."
