However, Maverick actor and producer Tom Cruise's absence from the awards show reportedly had a lot to do with the attendance of his former spouse Nicole Kidman according to Daily Mail.
Nicole Kidman, one of many famous people in attendance that evening, posed for photos outside the enormous Los Angeles stadium while holding hands with country singer Keith Urban, her second husband and the father of her two biological children.
One could be excused for expecting Tom Cruise would be present and correct for the acting community's greatest night of the year considering the roaring box office triumph Top Gun: Maverick's up for no fewer than six awards.
Kidman's rejection to join Cruise in the Church of Scientology is said to be the reason for their divorce in 2001, and the actor is said to have skipped the Oscars when he learned she was invited.
According to a source who spoke to DailyMail.com, Tom was not present because he did not want to cross paths with her.
Where, though, did everything go so terribly wrong?
At least for a while, Cruise and Kidman seemed to be able to maintain the kind of marital longevity one associates with a very small number of Hollywood couples.
During their encounter on the set of the 1990 cult racing thriller Days Of Thunder, Cruise and Kidman seemed to fit the same mold.
In the Tony Scott-directed movie, which was dubbed "Top Gun on wheels," Cruise, who was already a highly popular movie star with many Oscar nominations, played flamboyant racing car driver Cole Trickle, a kind of roadside Maverick.
Nevertheless, once Cole begins a turbulent connection with Kidman's Dr. Claire Lewicki, which seemed to portend their off-screen relationship, life becomes more difficult.
At the time, Kidman was 23 years old and an unknown in Hollywood due to her Australian heritage. But everything changed when a real-life romance began between the actors as they were filming.
After a three-year marriage to actress Mimi Rogers, who has been a longtime Scientologist and is largely credited with introducing Cruise to the faith, the couple divorced later that year.
Cruise and Kidman would eventually get married on Christmas Eve 1990, just months after they first met, despite how ephemeral their relationship first appeared to be (on-set flings are rarely given much credibility).
Despite not having biological children while they were married, they would eventually adopt two children: a son in 1995 and a daughter in 1992.
"I was so young when I got married. I look back now and I'm like, "What?"' Kidman told Red magazine in 2016. 'You look at Taylor Swift, I mean how old is she? She's 26."
Kidman added;
"I had two kids by the time I was 27 and I'd been married for four years. But that's what I wanted."
The fact that Cruise and Kidman appeared in two additional films together after their debut cooperation on Days Of Thunder is evidence of the couple's early intimacy.
In the 1992 epic Far and Away, they portrayed lovers with dubious Irish accents, while in Stanley Kubrick's 1999 thriller Eyes Wide Shut, the late director's final work, they portrayed a sexually active married couple.
However, Cruise abandoned his wife in 2001 after 12 years of marriage, leaving the actress in "utter shock." The same year, he filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable disagreements."
Kidman spoke candidly about her traumatic divorce from Cruise in an interview with DuJour magazine the following year. Nicole revealed to the outlet how she thought her marriage with Tom was perfect and how it took a long time to heal.
'We were in a bubble, just the two of us. We became very dependent on one another. I was reeling with Tom,' she told the outlet. 'I would have gone to the ends of the earth for him.... I was totally smitten - I fell madly, passionately in love.'
Over ten years have passed since the last interaction between the ex-couple. In fact, Kidman hasn't spoken to Isabella, 30, or Connor, 28, the two kids she adopted with Cruise, in years.
Like their father, Isabella and Connor are devout followers of The Church of Scientology. The church avoided Kidman and referred to her as an SP or Suppressive Person. She was separated from her family as a result.
Kidman finally spoke openly about her relationships with both children in a 2015 interview with Australia's Who magazine.
"They are adults. They are able to make their own decisions,' Kidman said, adding 'They have made choices to be Scientologists and as a mother, it's my job to love them."
Cruise, on the other hand, wed actress Katie Holmes in 2006. His connections to Scientology are blamed for their divorce, which occurred in 2012. Suri, the 16-year-old daughter of the couple, is allegedly estranged from her father.
