Eddie Murphy: 'I Would Return to Shrek in 2 Seconds'

While talking to Etalk, Murphy looked back on his extensive career. The actor recently returned to some of his old roles, Prince Akeem and Axle Foley, in the sequels of Coming to America and Beverly Hills Cop, respectively.

Murphy was asked about his thoughts on another Shrek movie. He said he would love to come back as Donkey on a fifth installment of the film or even have his own spin-off movie like Puss In Boots.

"I would do a Donkey movie; I would do another Shrek in two seconds," said the actor. However, he highlighted that this decision depends on DreamWorks. Murphy also said that though he loves Puss in Boots, he believes Donkey is way funnier.

The most recent Puss In Boots: The Last Wish movie was a box office success. The awaited sequel and sixth movie of the Shrek industry even got an Academy Award nomination for Best Animation Picture, so it's reasonable to think that a Donkey spin-off would be as successful.

As for DreamWorks Animations, the founder Chris Meledandri has discussed the possibility of a new movie. He is on board for it; however, he affirmed the charm of the movies resides in the vocal performances delivered by Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz as Shrek and Fiona.

Even though he loves talking about his past roles, Murphy is currently promoting his new Netflix production, You People. A comedy that follows him and Jonah Hill in a story about cultural and generational differences between a new couple and their families.

Murphy plays Akbar, Amira's father, who does everything to intimidate his potential son-in-law, Ezra, played by Hill. The film also counts Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Ezra's Jewish mother, Shelley. The film was released on Netflix on January 27th and has been positively received by the public.

The movie premiere was in Los Angeles a few days ago; Murphy attended with his partner, Paige Butcher, by his side in matching casual black looks. The couple has been together since 2012 and has two kids, Izzy and Max.

Whether there will be a new Donkey or not, 2023 will be a good year for the acclaimed actor, as he received the lifetime achievement prize in this year's edition of the Golden Globes. While we wait for the animated spin-off, we can enjoy his upcoming film, Beverly Hills Cop 4.
