'1899' Cancelled: 65,000 Angry Fans Petition Netflix For Renewal

As of writing, over 65,000 has signed the petition for renewal created by Jiří Matouš.

"1899 was clearly created with multiple seasons in mind. After the first season, there are a lot of unanswered questions and a big cliffhanger at the end of the last episode. We want a renewal of the show and a proper end to the story."

The series follows the mysterious happenings on a passenger steamship headed for New York. Disaster strikes, leaving the passengers stranded on the ship. Strange things happen and mysteries start to unfold one by one.

The cast includes Emily Beecham, Aneurin Barnard, Andreas Pietschmann, and Miguel Bernardeau, who all had impressive performances. The show has been praised for its diversity and representation of different cultures and sexuality.

Three days after its release, the show climbed up to the second spot of Netflix's Top 10 English Titles, with 79.27 million viewing hours.

It was also praised by critics and viewers, earning a score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran Bo Odar, also the creators of Dark, took to Instagram to explain how they felt about the whole thing.

“We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned.”

Some of the cast members commented on the Instagram post and expressed their dismay over the cancellation.

Aneurin Barnard, who plays Daniel Solace, in the series, said it doesn't make sense why a hugely popular show would be dropped.

The streaming platform has been getting a lot of backlash for seemingly pulling the plug too early on good shows, but there is a simple explanation for their decision.

According to reports, Netflix places great importance on the completion rate of a show.

While the series pulled great numbers at the start, many viewers didn't actually finish the whole thing.

Another likely reason is the expensive production costs that come with the sci-fi show. The series was filmed in a state-of-the-art virtual production stage housed at Babelsberg Studios in Germany.

Fans have been adamant about their demand - a season 2 and season 3 to wrap up the complex storylines of 1899.

On Twitter, fans have also created the hashtag #save1899 in an attempt to save the show.

Other fan-favorite shows that got the boot after one season include The Midnight Club, Resident Evil, and Blockbuster.
