As much as we all wish our pets would live forever, we tend to outlive them by decades. Still, the decade or so you get with a dog (and a little bit more with a cat) is time that you'll cherish for the rest of your life.

Some pet parents are lucky enough to have pets that live beyond their typical life expectancies, though. If you're lucky, you could see a cat live to 20 years, or even older! In fact, the oldest living cat, according to the Guinness World Records, is nearly 27 years old. Even for a cat, that's exceedingly old.

Her Name Is Flossie, And She Lives In The UK.

Flossie is a black and brown cat who, as of the time of this article's writing, is 26 years and 329 days old, just a couple of months short of turning 27. That would be the equivalent of 120 in human years, CNN reports. Though she isn't the oldest cat ever recorded, she holds the title among any cat that's currently alive.

While she does have advanced hearing and sight loss, she is otherwise in excellent health.

Flossie Currently Lives With Vicki Green A UK Resident Who Adopted Her Earlier This Year.

"I knew from the start that Flossie was a special cat, but I didn’t imagine I’d share my home with a world record holder. She’s so affectionate and playful, especially sweet when you remember how old she is. I’m immensely proud that Cats Protection matched me with such an amazing cat," Vicki said to CNN, referring to the cat shelter to which Flossie was surrendered in August.

According to CNN, Flossie was born in 1995 and lived as a stray near Merseyside hospital in Liverpool. A worker in the hospital adopted her, and the two lived together until the owner's death when Flossie was 10. She was adopted a second time and lived with that owner for 14 years.

When Flossie's second owner died, the owner's son took care of her for 3 years, and then surrendered her to Cats Protection. That's when Vicki came into her life. Vicki had actually set out to adopt an older cat, saying, "I’ve always wanted to give older cats a comfortable later life."

Flossie Is The Oldest Living Cat, But The Oldest Ever Cat Died In 2005.

A cat named Crème Puff reached a hugely impressive 38 years before passing.

On the dog side, the current oldest living dog on record is named Gino Wolf and is currently 22 years and 2 months old. The previous record-holder, a 22 years and 7 months old terrier named Pebbles, passed away last month.
