TV Shows That Recast Actors So Fast We Hardly Noticed

Recasts happen all the time. With scheduling conflicts, tensions between cast and/or crew, and a certain actor's overall fit (or lack thereof) in a role, it makes sense why TV shows will recast a character from one season to the next.

These shows all recast characters pretty early on in their appearances, sometimes so quickly you might not have noticed. Or maybe you did, and you've always been wondering why.

Fans of the show may remember Florencia Lozano as Eleanor Waldorf, Blair's mother, in the pilot episode of Gossip Girl. But maybe not, since she was replaced from the character's next appearance onward with Margaret Colin.

And Colin is definitely more recognizable in the role.

The reason why Lozano was replaced was because, at 37 at the time of filming, she just seemed too young to pass for Leighton Meester's mother. At least, that's what the showrunners thought.

Pam's mom, Helene Beesly, was first seen in the show's second season, portrayed by Shannon Cochran. She wasn't seen again very often after that, and didn't factor into the show until her reappearance in season 6.

But by this point, Helene was portrayed by Linda Purl.

This is because, by the time the show was ready for Helene to appear once more, Cochran was already busy on tour with a theater company.

In season 1 of the teen drama, Alison's brother was portrayed by Parker Bagley. He was quickly replaced with Drew Van Ecker from season 2 onward, because the show creators wanted to take the character in a new direction.

They were planning on making him more of a bad boy-type character.

The show creators thought that Van Ecker played a dark and mysterious character better than Bagley could, which was their reasoning behind recasting the role after just a season.

Fans of the show may remember Shailene Woodley as Kaitlin Cooper in the pilot and early episodes. But her character went away to boarding school, and Woodley had to re-audition for the role when she was set to make her return in season 3.

Which she ultimately didn't get.

Instead, Willa Holland ended up being cast as Kaitlin going forward. According to Woodley, she was just too young-looking at the time to properly portray the character, now well into her teen years.

Ann Veal in 'Arrested Development.'

If you happen to remember Ann, a character whose entire schtick is that she's incredibly forgettable, you might remember that she was played by two different actors. In season 1, she was portrayed by Alessandra Torresani, and season 2 onward, she was played by Mae Whitman.

But she was actually supposed to be swapped out again.

The whole joke was that Ann was so forgettable, no one would notice (or care) if she was played by different actresses. So, she was supposed to be played by someone else for season 3, and so forth.

But they ended up liking Whitman's portrayal enough to keep her on as Ann.

Meg Griffin in 'Family Guy.'

Considering how long Family Guy has been on the air, it might be hard to remember a time when Meg Griffin was voiced by someone other than Mila Kunis. But in the first season, she was actually voiced by Lacey Chabert.

Chabert decided to leave the show after season 1.

And she did so because she could. Apparently, there was some kind of mistake in her contract that meant she didn't need to be there past a single season, and Chabert decided to pursue other things. Don't worry, though, there's no bad blood between her and the rest of the cast.

Dawn in 'The Baby-Sitters Club.'

The Netflix adaptation saw Xochitl Gomez as Dawn, before she landed the role of America Chavez in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With filming occurring during pandemic restrictions, Gomez wasn't sure how she could do both the show and the movie at the same time.

So, she stepped down from the role for season 2.

Dawn was then recast with Kyndra Sanchez, who got welcomed to the club in a pretty adorable video back in March of 2021.

Larry Sawyer in 'One Tree Hill.'

Peyton's dad, Larry Sawyer, was originally played by Thomas Ian Griffith. But Griffith only had the role for five episodes of the first season, and was replaced with Kevin Kilner the next time Larry appeared.

Apparently, he and Hilarie Burton were "too flirty."

Burton, who played Peyton during the show's entire run, was told that she and Griffith were "too flirty" to be father and daughter, so they went with Kilner instead.

Reggie Mantle in 'Riverdale.'

Charles Melton, who replaced Ross Butler as Reggie Mantle in Riverdale.

Let's face it, Reggie being recast isn't the weirdest thing to happen during Riverdale's 6+ season run. But there is a reason why Charles Melton, who we know as Reggie now, replaced Ross Butler, who only appeared for a single season.

It's because Butler landed a role on '13 Reasons Why.'

Butler was in the first season of Riverdale around the same time he was in the first season of 13 Reasons Why, playing Zach Dempsey. He decided to stay with the latter, leaving the former.

But, in a (surprisingly clever) callback, Butler came back to guest appear on Riverdale season 6 as an alternate dimension Reggie (yes, you read that right).

Morgan Matthews in 'Boy Meets World.'

Corey Matthews had a little sister named Morgan, who was originally portrayed by Lily Nicksay. Nicksay appeared in the first two seasons of the show, but season three onward was replaced with Lindsay Ridgeway.

Why? Because Nicksay didn't want to be an actress.

Despite the cast agreeing that she was a good actress, even at such a young age, it was pretty clear that she didn't want to be on set. So she decided to step away from acting.
