This is the situation two Canadian women found themselves in after finding out a truly nightmarish possibility: the fact that they may be closely related.
We're all related. Everyone on the planet is, at the very least, your sixth cousin. While laws may vary from state to state and country to country, most municipalities accept the fact that cousins will sometimes fall in love and get married.
Opinions on cousin love may vary, but most people would agree that falling in love with a sibling is a particularly icky idea.
Carley and Mercedes are a couple in Ontario, Canada. You can find them on TikTok, appropriately enough, at the @carleyandmercedes handle. From the outside looking in, all appears well in their relationship.
That is, of course, until they found out that their moms both slept with the same guy around the same time.
It made for some particularly spicy drama, even by TikTok standards. Many commenters noted that the two women look quite similar, and pondered what might happen if it turned out they were actually half sisters.
It's kind of a monkey's paw scenario: you get to find the love of your life, someone you're totally attracted to and totally in tune with, but it comes with the caveat that you might actually be siblings.
Carley and Mercedes both found the awkward humor in the situation, and enjoyed hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok.
But underneath the humor and the drama, there was a very real question: if they're sisters, what would they actually do?
Not many couples could rest easy knowing they might be siblings, so Carley and Mercedes decided to bite the bullet and get a DNA test. The video above has all the details, but to spare you the suspense, they're not sisters. Phew.
While the chaotic evil types who crave drama probably hoped they truly were sisters, most commenters were happy for Carley and Mercedes. After all, they clearly have a strong relationship and it would be a shame for things to end in such a weird and awkward way.
While the two women poked fun at their situation, there was some real anxiety lurking beneath the humor.
"We were very anxious and the thought of potentially being related was horrifying, but we just tried to keep ourselves busy," they said.
