The United States Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June has been a devastating blow to women and human rights. Hurt and anger has been felt both within the country, and all around the world.
People have spent the last month venting their anger over the massive restrictions to abortion access that have happened as a result of the ruling. Cher has recently been one such person.
"When I was young I had 3 miscarriages.1st at 18," Cher, 76, wrote. "I was alone in our house. son came home & I was sobbing,& rocking on our floor."
"couldn’t even stop in elevator.dr sent me straight 2 hospital,& in2 operating rm."
She concludes the tweet by asking, "WHAT WOULD HAPPEN 2 ME TODAY," referring to how her miscarriage treatments could've been impacted by abortion bans.
"Never thought I’d need 2," she wrote in a reply. "These Insane republicans will kill our WOMEN 4 POLITICS‼️"
"MOTHERS, SISTERS AUNTS, COUSINS, BEST FRIENDS…NO WOMAN IS SAFE IN AMERICA‼️ SOON NO SANE PERSON WILL BE SAFE. THESE ARE NOT JUST WORDS, NO CLIMATE LAWS, NO💰4 NEW POWER GRIDS. GOP=GUNS, FEAR, VIOLENCE."
Michelle Obama, Megan Thee Stallion, Taylor Swift, Alyssa Milano, and many others have shared their own outrage across social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
Dancing With the Stars's Cheryl Burke posted her own story to TikTok, discussing how she had an abortion at 18.
"I wouldn't have been a great mother and I definitely wouldn't be sitting with you today," she said.
"The court has failed us all — but we won’t back down. I’m going to keep fighting because everyone deserves access to the care they need," Megan Thee Stallion wrote in an Instagram post.
Outright bans on abortion can severely impact the kind of healthcare a woman, trans man, or nonbinary person may be able to access.
Many procedures to expel miscarried fetuses are similar to elective abortions, and there have already been reports of women who have miscarried being denied these procedures.
When the decision was announced on June 24th, Cher also tweeted her anger toward the Supreme Court.
