Titanic is one of the most iconic and beloved films of the '90s. Not only did it help usher the entertainment industry into the 21st century, but also birthed one of the greatest friendships in the history of Hollywood.
Since their very first interactions on set, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have been the very best of friends. For those who thought they knew everything there is to know about the iconic duo, here are 15 heartwarming facts about Kate and Leo's friendship.
While describing their first encounter in an interview with Magnus Sundholm, Kate explained how their first meeting was magic — literally. She and Leo were introduced in a hotel room, alongside magician David Blaine.
"I did think to myself beforehand, it's going to be hard because, you know, what if I really fancy him? And I so thought I was going to because he is absolutely gorgeous," Kate told Access Hollywood.
Back in 2017, during Leo's annual LDF charity dinner, Leo and Kate decided to auction off a dinner with the two of them for three lucky Titanic super fans. They even brought along Billy Zane for good measure.
Before filming began, the actors both knew of one another but had never actually worked together on anything prior. In a 1998 interview with Access Hollywood, Kate admitted how she desperately hoped Leo would get the part.
The wedding ceremony was such a big secret that apparently Kate's own parents weren't even aware that it had happened. According to British media reports, Leo was the one who gave Kate away.
During an interview with Glamour, Kate confessed that she and Leo will still drum up old bits of dialogue from the iconic film. She wouldn't go as far as to say which lines they were, only that their conversations often get incredibly silly.
It was the year that a vast majority of actors abstained from attending, due to the lack of inclusivity. Kate, however, said that she just knew that this was Leo's year and wouldn't have missed it for the world. It turns out that she was right!
He pondered the question for a moment, joking that he'd kissed a lot of bad actresses. Finally, he said with a smile that he couldn't choose anyone other than Kate.
“He’s a solid, loyal person,” Winslet told People in 2016. “He’s a great friend, he always has been, and not just to me, but to everyone around him. He still has friends he had when we made Titanic.”
Due to COVID restrictions, Kate and Leo weren't able to leave their respective countries. When they finally reunited, after three years of not seeing one another, Kate couldn't hold back her emotions and wept uncontrollably.
Kate has had some bumps and bruises when it comes to romance, and Leo has always been there to help her pick up the pieces. Her kids love him and they even refer to him as "Uncle Leo."
The opportunity came roughly a decade after Titanic when Leo and Kate were cast as April and Frank Wheeler in Revolutionary Road. A film which Leo said was years in the making.
Despite rumors abound, Leo and Kate have never once even thought about entering into a romantic relationship with one another. According to Kate, their affection for one another is more on the level of brother/sister.
Probably not in the manner in which your thinking, as this ring was a friendship ring. While filming Revolutionary Road, Leo gifted Kate a gold engraved band as a symbol of their unbreakable bond.
In the official BTS book on Titanic, Leo said "She wanted to break the ice a little beforehand, so she flashed me. I wasn’t prepared for that, so she had one up on me. I was pretty comfortable after that.”
