James Gunn Revealed Groot's Last Line In 'Infinity War,' And The Implications Are Huge

Diply 7 May 2018

Despite having an extremely limited vocabulary, Groot is probably our favorite character when it comes to ranking all of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Sorry, Star-Lord.

He was a major team player in Infinity War, even though he was a sassy teenager throughout the film and was glued to his video game for most of it.

Recently, we learned something fairly significant about one of Groot's lines, and if you have yet to see the film, consider yourself warned.

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

If you're not already aware, Groot can only say three words: "I am Groot." We understand what he is saying when another character (usually Rocket) translates his words for us.

However, if someone doesn't tell us what he means, then we just don't know......that is, unless a certain director informs us on Twitter.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn isn't afraid to respond to our questions when it comes to our beloved Groot, but we need to be emotionally prepared for the answer.

If anyone recalls, Gunn destroyed our hearts and souls when he dropped this bombshell on us not too long ago.

I'm still recovering.

Well, James is back at it again with the heartbreak, and this time, it's hitting us directly in the feels.

One fan asked Gunn if he knew what Groot said as he faded away into dust (thanks, Thanos) at the end of Infinity War. He responded, and we wish he hadn't.

Oh. My. God.

Nope. That's it. I am done. See you never. Let's all just pack up and head on home because there is no way I am ever going to recover from this level of feelings.

This hurts even more when you remember that Groot was reaching towards Rocket as he evaporated into thin air. That's right, friends. Groot considers Rocket to be his dad.

And I am sobbing.

Since Rocket was part of the group that didn't turn to dust, we're likely going to have to see him deal with losing Groot (who was like a son to him) in Avengers 4.

We already had to deal with Groot sacrificing himself in Guardians of the Galaxy, and it was painful enough to watch Rocket experience that grief. Fans are not handling this well.

Also, as we all may recall, Groot came back — or his son did, at least. This is going to be way tougher on Rocket.

We're all going to need some intense counselling after this revelation, especially when we remember Rocket painfully pleading with Groot not to go.

My emotions! MY EMOTIONS! Honestly, Infinity War should have handed out some tips on how to cope with loss.

Many fans are begging to hear that this might not actually be the case, but we don't see why James Gunn would joke about something so heartbreaking.

He's not that evil, right?

We all wish that James never answered this question. Hell, even the fan who asked it in the first place wishes they hadn't asked.

This is all your fault, Joe Green! I hope you're happy.

Now we're going to go rock back and forth in the corner alone with our feelings. Thanks, James. You've ruined us all.

I'll be calling in sick to work from now until I figure out how to deal with this revelation.
