Sniffles The Noseless Dog Needs A Forever Home

There's a special place in my heart for people who are good to animals. Over and above that, the folks who give good, sweet animals a second chance at a good life, who patch them up and see them through tough times, are absolute saints.

Don't you just want the best for the doggies and kitties that haven't found homes yet? Don't they all deserve a nice warm lap and a scratch behind the ears? Yes. Yes they do.

However, one dog's story is capturing more attention than most, and it's easy to see why.

This is Sniffles, a dog rescued by Pooch and Poodle Rescue of Florida.

Sniffles came to the rescue organization just before Christmas, and it didn't take long for him to start turning heads. It is indeed unusual to see a dog with no nose, but Sniffles isn't any less lovable for it.

The rescue believes Sniffles is about 12 years old and clearly hasn't been pampered his whole life.

In fact, it's a pretty sad story. He came to Florida from Puerto Rico, where he lost his nose in a fight with some bigger dogs in 2017. However, a rescue organization there called Rabito Kontento (Happy Tails) raised enough money to get him some facial surgery.

From there he went to Florida as an adoptee, but animal control found him as a stray after escaping his home several times.

He had a few health problems beyond his poor nose, however, including hookworms and whipworms, which the rescue says they only see "when dogs were kept in filthy, outside environment for a long period of time."

The good news is that even though Sniffles has only been with the rescue for a short time, he's responding well.

"He's very laid back, but he gets these random bursts of energy," Michelle Wacker, the rescue's medical director, told Today. "He gives Eskimo kisses." Of course he would.

Better still, he's received tons of interest from big-hearted people who want to take him in.

Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida says that since Sniffles' story started getting out there, they've received "200+ emails, voice messages, social media inquiries and applications" that they're sorting through to find "the absolute best and most suitable home for Sniffles."

So things are definitely looking up for Sniffles!

"The outpouring of support has been overwhelming and heartwarming," the rescue said. "Sniffles is going to be a-okay and we ask that you please set your sights on some of our other dogs in need." Which is an excellent point — there are plenty of other dogs out there in need of good homes, not just Sniffles.
