Hilary Duff and her boyfriend Jason Walsh once thought it might be fun to fit some cultural appropriation into their hectic schedule. Did no one tell them dressing as a pilgrim and a Native American might be a tad insulting? As a double whammy, both wore these controversial costumes during protests over the Dakota Access Pipeline. Shaun White as a mentally challenged person

Shaun White apologized on Twitter on Tuesday after dressing up as "Simple Jack," a character from the movie Tropic Thunder, for Halloween. The character, originally played by Ben Stiller, received controversy when the movie originally aired. Three-time Olympic gold medalist White deleted his Instagram post after complaints from members of the Special Olympics. "I owe everyone in the Special Olympics community an apology for my poor choice of Halloween costume the other night," White said, according to USA Today. "It was a last minute decision. It was the wrong one."

Ashley Benson dressed as Cecil the Lion one year, not clueing in to the fact that her portrayal of a lion who was hunted and killed in 2015 might offend some people. The Pretty Little Liars star wrote, "What do you think of this Cecil the Lion costume?" in a photo caption depicting her in a gold-toned, fur-lined outfit. She apologized the next day.
